The Unikko pattern came about in 1964 after Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, announced in public that no floral fabrics are designed at Marimekko. Maija Isola, the renowned Finnish designer, did not accept rules or restrictions and designed a complete collection of bold floral patterns in protest: Unikko, a Finnish word that means poppy. Today, Unikko is one of Marimekko's best-known patterns and recognised around the world.
Founded in 1951, Marimekko is a celebrated Finnish design house known for its bold, iconic prints. For over seven decades, Marimekko has embraced colour, creativity, and self-expression, inspiring people to live joyfully and confidently as they are. Their timeless designs continue to bring vibrant beauty and positivity into homes and everyday life around the world
